Not only does China have the world’s largest population. Not only does it have the largest number of Internet users in the go world, numbering 1 billion, but China is increasingly an online and connected society. Chinese are not sitting at home or office at their desks with the computers on, but are on mobile devices in an incredibly connected society. Today more than ever, in the time of Covid and increased health awareness, the mobile phone, either android for Apple, has apps such as Alipay and WeChat which create entire ecosystems for people to go about their daily lives and their business. China is not a society where people stop what they’re doing to open their laptop and look something up. It is a society where people are on their mobile device every day for long periods of time and use that device to run their businesses do their jobs, and go about their business of life. They do their shopping, order cars, purchase movie tickets, talk to friends, pay for lunch… Everything with their mobile phones.
According to the World Economic Forum, On average, global internet users spent 2 hours and 23 minutes on social media sites everyday. This is 17.5 hours per week.
When we compare that global average to the China average, Chinese internet users spend well over 30% more time on the internet then citizens of other countries do.

Very simply this means that traditional channels don’t work. You can’t take out a print ad in a magazine and wait for the phone to start ringing. The tools that you might use such as Google or Facebook or Twitter or Instagram cannot be accessed from the market. Now, more than ever, trade shows are not a viable option. Attendance numbers are down and travel is difficult if not impossible.
